Excellent value for money and very caring ski schools are the main selling points of a ski holiday in Bulgaria. Although resorts tend to be small they offer high quality skiing and they are relatively unspoilt. The continental climate results in cold sunny weather dominating the winter until late February, allowing for fine powder snow conditions. By late March it is possible to ski in a T-shirt and at resorts such as Bansko skiing continues till the end of April. Christmas skiing is not guaranteed – however, generally by New Year most of the resorts should have good skiing conditions.
The ski-season duration in the average- and high-altitude mountain resorts is up to 190 days. Ski runs’ total length exceeds 100 km with level differences of up to 1500 m. The most famous ski resorts - Borovets, Bansko, Pamporovo and Aleko, have year-round functioning accommodation facilities and a winter sports infrastructure (lifts, Alpine skiing and ski-running runs) continuously renovated and developed. Most of the big ski resorts have artificial snow machines and lighted runs.
The smaller ski-centres of local importance include Semkovo, Panichishte, Rilski Ezera (Rila Lakes), Malyovitsa and Govedartsi in Rila Mountain, Bezbog in Pirin Mountain; Petrohan, Kom, Strazhata, Beklemeto (near Troyan), Pleven, Uzana (15 km Southwest of Gabrovo), Bazov Dyal (near Apriltsi), Choumerna in Stara Planina; Zdravets, Byala Cherkva, Persenk, Yundola, Martsiganitsa, Dobriniste in the Rhodope Mountains, Vetrovala and Konyarnika in Vitosha Mountain among many others.
